All Music Guide Reviews best of the web
This ultimate music guide has intelligent, well-researched reviews of major and minor artists and their history of releases.

The Ballad Tree
On this site, I attempt to introduce readers to good new artists and offer candid assessments of those who are already known. I occasionally launch into a lengthy discussion of larger songwriting issues.

acousticmusic.com
Well-written, mostly well-informed reviews, but with few critical notes. Mostly a celebration of contemporary folk and acoustic music, both the good and the sentimental.

Alt-Country Page
Reviewer John Brandon writes thoughtful, well-written and refreshingly candid reviews of alt-country/Americana artists. Doesn't look too deeply into lyrics, but has a good ear. Older reviews are here.

Ectophiles Guide to Good Music
Hundreds of musicians in every genre are reviewed by a group of enthusiastic "commentators" whose long-running mailing list has succeeded in defining a genre of music: music that's good. What a concept!

Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange (FAME)
Hundreds of singer-songwriter CD reviews from the last few years, covering both nationally known acts and regional artists. Most are generous but judicious and well-written.

Green Man
An excellent online review of folk and traditional music, books and video/film. Candid, well-written reviews - generous but realistic.

Independent Songwriter Web Magazine
Wide range of genres, and you can find out about some cool releases, but for a zine that claims to be about songwriting, the reviews don't talk much about songs: what the writers are writing about and how. Mostly adjectives.

Indie Acoustic Project (IAP)
Attempts to pick the top 50 indie folk releases of the 90s, in categories like male/female singersongwriter, social commentary, instrumental, Celtic, folk/alt rock, etc. My list is 90% different, so check out this serious, well-thought out site for new ideas.

Indie-Music.com
Smart reviews, usually with quotations, but few are folk. Most are alternative and rock, but some acoustic rock has slipped in - Lisa McCormack and Pamela Means. Good reading and browsing.

Kevin's Celtic & Folk Music CD Reviews
Generally excellent reviews - thoughtful, comprehensive, and he quotes enough for you to have grounds to agree or disagree. Separate pages for Folk, Celtic, and UK Folk releases.

Minor 7th Reviews
Reviews of new releases with an emphasis on acoustic, independent and obscure guitar music - including singer-songwriters with good licks.

Muse's Muse
This online newsletter includes reviews of independently released CDs. They are brief and not especially informative about the writing, but respectful.

Next Best Thing to Being There Concert Reviews
Bill McCloud's play by play reviews of concerts by some of the folk scene's favorite artists. If you couldn't be there (ie. Oklahoma), you can still feel like you were.

Portland Music Central
Some folk and Celtic reviews amongst the alternative and rock reviews. The site also has links to chords and tabs for a lot of popular music. Oh, that's Portland Australia.

Rambles
This intriguing online cultural magazine is an excellent source of smart reviews of British, Celtic and European roots music, folk roots, folk rock, jazz, bluegrass, and world music.

Sound Bytes
Reviews by folk radio DJ Bob MacKenzie.

War Against Silence
Glenn MacDonald writes detailed, smart and wryly humorous reviews of a wide variety of music, though I wish he'd cite lyrics sometimes. Go to the site and type "folk" in the search box to find hundreds of reviews.

Wild Plum - Listeners' Concert Reviews
A new site (9/00) dedicated to giving concert goers a place to post reviews - unedited. Only a handful of reviews so far, so go, publish!
