Hugh's MP3 Pick: 3/21/00
Edward J. Smith
"Take Me Home," from Take Me Home (no label, 1999)
Ed Smith was a singersongwriter, guitarist, keyboard player, percussionist, composer, producer and engineer. He toiled in obscurity, working mostly as an accompanist for others, until his untimely death in 1997. When I first heard "Take Me Home" it was at Ed's memorial service. We had talked often about his near death experience; it had left him without any fear of death, and sometimes he longed for it. He never felt at home in this world, and in this song he tries to recapture that sense of immanent peace that always eludes him. Hearing the chorus eased my grief for him:

What's the use of looking back if you know where to begin
Take me someplace like I've never been before
Take me home....
